Inside Out 2 Becomes Pixar's Biggest Hit
It seems the whole world is watching Pixar's newest animated movie Inside Out 2, as it recently became the highest-earning film the Disney-owned studio has ever made.
The movie, a sequel to 2015's Inside Out, has been a hit at the global box office, making over $1.3 billion since its release on June 13, 2024. Previously, Incredibles 2 held the top spot for Pixar, making over $1.2 billion in 2018.
According to The Numbers, Inside Out 2's popularity has made it the third highest-earning animated movie ever made, behind 2019's Frozen II and last year's The Super Mario Bros. Movie.
It is also the most successful film of 2024 so far, and the only one to earn over $1 billion since Barbie in 2023.
The Inside Out movies follow the main character, a young girl named Riley, and tell the story of her emotions from inside her mind. Each of her emotions has its own character and these include Joy, Anger, and Sadness.
Directed by Kelsey Mann, the sequel continues the story of the first film, with 13-year-old Riley now a teenager, and new characters introduced such as Anxiety and Embarrassment.
In an interview with A.Frame, Mann said the sequel was inspired by his old birthday photographs, especially one from his thirteenth birthday.
"I looked miserable," he said. "And it was such a contrast from when I was five. I was like, 'What happened?!'"
Mann went on to explain that he wanted the movie to speak to teenagers who felt that they weren't worthy of love and attention. "I want teens to be able to look at themselves in the mirror and love what they see," he added.
While children under 12 made up a large percentage of viewers in the movie's first weekend — 25% — a large number of teens also made their way to the cinema to watch it, with 14% of viewers aged 13 to 17, according to CNBC.
