Americans Plan to Take Extra Vacation Days in 2021
Americans plan to use an extra five days of vacation leave in 2021 compared to 2020, according to travel website Expedia's newest Vacation Deprivation study.
The annual study looks at how many vacation days are offered to workers, and how many they use. Expedia found that 64% of Americans say they feel "vacation deprivation."
The study says that, on average, workers in the US were offered 13 vacation days in 2020, but only used 8 of them. And even when workers took vacation days, they weren't always used to relax — 47% said they used at least one vacation day in 2020 to look after children or sick family members.
The study also found that in late 2020, 26% of Americans said they hadn't taken a vacation in over a year, compared with only 16% in 2019. The pandemic affected travel plans for many people, and 42% of participants said they had canceled one or more trips because of the coronavirus.
And while the pandemic isn't over, 36% of Americans are planning to start taking regular vacations again in 2021. Also, 32% plan on taking more vacations than usual.
Expedia's data shows that Americans are looking for vacation destinations that offer warm weather and beaches. The most searched places for March and April trips have been in Mexico, Florida and Hawaii, as well as Las Vegas.
Vacations aren't just fun, they are also good for our health. A good holiday can reduce depression, anxiety and stress, and have a positive effect on mood. They also make people more productive when they return to work.
