New Coin Celebrates UK Pop Star George Michael
The band Wham! is well known around the world, especially for its song Last Christmas. But here's the perfect present for fans next Christmas: a collectable coin with lead singer George Michael's face on it!
The Royal Mint — the place where coins are made in the UK — has released a number of special coins featuring Michael.
The pop star died in 2016 aged 53, after a very successful music career first with Wham! and later as a solo performer.
The coin shows Michael wearing sunglasses and a cross earring in his left ear. It's a look he was known for at the time he released his song Faith in 1987.
Fans won't want to use these in shops — technically they could, although most places wouldn't take them — and some of them are being sold for a lot of money on the Royal Mint's website.
The cheapest coin can be bought for almost $20 and it comes with a booklet that tells the story of Michael's life.
As well as showing Michael on the front, there is a portrait of King Charles III on the back.
A number of other coins are also available, including 150 special edition gold coins that are being sold for more than $3,500.
Another gold coin was on sale for more than $6,700 but it is no longer available.
George Michael Entertainment said that the singer would have been very proud to see his face on coins like these.
He's not the first popular singer to have his face on a collectable coin. These coins are part of the Royal Mint's "Music Legends" series that also includes Shirley Bassey, David Bowie and Elton John.
