Tripadvisor: World's Best Beach Found in Portugal
Long stretches of gold sand, clear blue waters and the sun shining down — there are many beaches around the world that can be described in this way.
But one in particular has been named the world's best by travelers on Tripadvisor.
To create its "Best of the Best Beaches" list, the popular travel website looked at reviews of beaches all over the world, left by millions of people who visited them between October 2022 and September 2023.
And Praia da Falésia in the south of Portugal came in first place.
The name means "cliff beach," and anyone who's been to this beach or seen pictures of it can understand why — Praia da Falésia is found at the bottom of very tall orange cliffs. And although the area is popular with tourists, there are very few buildings and the beach is largely untouched.
Second on the list is Italy's Spiaggia dei Conigli — which means "rabbit beach" — found on the island of Lampedusa, halfway between Sicily and Tunisia. It's popular for its white beaches, clear waters and sea turtles, which often go there to lay their eggs.
In third place is another European beach: La Concha Beach in the north of Spain, found right in the middle of the city of San Sebastian. Spain's Queen Isabel II is believed to have made this beach popular in 1845, after her doctors told her to swim there for better skin.
Some might be surprised that the top three beaches are all in Europe. But Sarah Firshein, who works for Tripadvisor, said this might show that many travelers are moving away from resort vacations in places like the Caribbean.
