Get Paid $90,000 to Move to a Remote Irish Island
While living in a busy area is great for a lot of things, some people want the peace and quiet that come with living in a place surrounded by nature.
But if you want more than just peace and quiet, Ireland is offering to pay people over $90,000 to move to a remote island.
In June 2023, the government published its "Our Living Islands" policy to help communities on about 30 remote Irish islands, and possibly encourage more people to move there.
Under the Vacant Property Refurbishment Grant, the government will pay people who buy a property on one of the islands and restore it.
The property must have been built before 1993, and have been empty for at least two years before being bought. The money must also be used for the house, such as for building and restoration work.
This policy is part of a larger program where people can get up to about $55,000 for restoring old, empty properties on the Irish mainland.
Ireland isn't the first country to introduce a program like this.
In Italy, people could be paid over $30,000 to move to Presicce-Acquarica, a small town in the south.
Several years ago, the country also started selling homes on the southern island of Sicily for one euro — or just over $1 — if the person who buys the house restores it and lives in it. Now one-euro houses can be found in small towns all over the country.
