Man With Coronavirus Disguises Himself as Wife to Fly
An Indonesian man with the coronavirus was able to get on a flight disguised as his wife. He wore a niqab to cover his face and carried his wife's ID and her negative COVID-19 test result.
The man has not been named, and only his initials — DW — have been shared.
DW managed to get on a Citilink plane going from Jakarta to the Indonesian island of Ternate, but his plan did not work for long. Police say a member of the flight staff saw that DW had changed back into men's clothes in the bathroom. He was arrested after the plane landed in Ternate.
"He bought the plane ticket with his wife's name and brought the identity card, the PCR test result and the vaccination card with his wife's name. All documents are under his wife's name," Aditya Laksimada from the Ternate police said.
Police took the man for a COVID-19 test, which came back with a positive result. The man is now self-isolating at home and police said their investigation will continue.
There were over 33,700 new cases of the virus and almost 1,400 deaths in the 24 hours before DW's arrest was reported. The total number of COVID-19 cases in Indonesia is now over 3 million, and over 79,000 people in the country have died from the virus.
The World Health Organization reported that Indonesia had the highest number of new COVID-19 cases in the world for the week of July 12. The number of new cases has been decreasing since then, but experts say that deaths will continue to rise.
