'Don't Look at Your Hands': What Is Joggling?
Life is busy. Sometimes we have to work while we're on the train, or take a phone call while we're making lunch.
People often say that they're "juggling responsibilities." They mean that they feel like they're juggling all the different things they have to do at once.
They aren't really juggling, of course. At least, most of them aren't.
But then there are the "jogglers." These people are quite literally juggling while they do another activity at the same time!
They're a small but growing community of people who like to run while juggling. It's called "joggling" — a combination of the words "juggling" and "jogging."
For many of us, juggling would be hard enough without adding anything else to it.
But some jogglers have gotten so used to it that they can run almost as fast while juggling as they can normally!
It's not actually a new sport. It's said to have started in the US in the 1970s, when a juggler took his balls to a running track to practice, and found that it wasn't as hard as he'd thought to do the two things at once.
The number of people interested in joggling grew, and rules were made.
Jogglers must juggle three or more objects, and if they're in a competition and drop an object, they have to stop and start again from the place where they dropped it.
There's even a Joggling World Championship. The first one took place in 1980, and jogglers from around the world will take part in the next one in July in the US.
Most of the World Championship events are run over short distances, but people run marathons while juggling too.
The trick, as one joggler told the BBC, is: don't look at your hands!
