Saint Lucy Website

Saint Lucy:

  • Launched April 2011
  • WordPress customized theme

About the project:

Saint Lucy (saint-lucy.com) is an engaging forum for essays and conversations about contemporary art, photography, and the people of Baltimore. Created by author & artist Mark Alice Durant, Saint Lucy is not your traditional art & photo magazine site. For Saint Lucy, I created the logo illustration and for the design we (myself & Joseph Faura) used a portfolio-style layout with a more subdued color palette, which helps the real subject–the images, stand out. Mark also gave me the opportunity to write for Saint Lucy in his One Picture/One Paragraph section – which is a great idea for starting conversations about imaging and how we perceive the world. I hope you enjoy reading the rich content of Saint Lucy as much as I do.

Out Of Your Head Website

Out Of Your Head website

Out Of Your Head:

  • Launched Feb 2010
  • custom WordPress theme

About the project:

Out Of Your Head (outofyourhead.org) was formed by musicians Adam Hopkins & Matt Frazão (of Quartet Offensive) in 2009 as a performing collective of rotating musicians, all improvising new material with each other on a weekly basis. The regularly scheduled program is free and happens weekly at the Windup Space. Working with one of my favorite artists Matt Bovie on this site was amazing! Adam & I asked Matt to just come up with a cool logo, and he totally delivered. Developing a theme from scratch for WordPress was a lot of fun too, and a bit of a challenge – but that’s where Joseph Faura’s programming expertise really came in handy. Hope you enjoy the site, and definitely make it out to a Tuesday night Out Of Your Head – there’s a reason they got voted “Best Band” in the City Paper!

The Hometown Tourist Website

Hometown Tourist website

The Hometown Tourist:

  • Launched in 2008
  • Flash site

About the project:

When Susan Allenback (aka the Hometown Tourist) and I first met about creating her website, we had a lot of big ideas – and working with her throughout the entire process was incredible, we kept fostering the big ideas and went for a total concept site using Flash (you can see it at thehometowntourist.net). The initial inspiration was to fashion the site like you’re flipping through the pages of a travel journal, where you can discover a new place that she had visited and is writing about, then all the info you need to go visit it yourself is right there. I spent months photographing and scanning journals, scraps of paper, stamps, and piecing it all together in Photoshop, then building it out with animations and transitions in Flash. The biggest challenge was balancing the look and feel of the site with usability – we wanted it to be fun and colorful and at the same time clear and simple to use. You can catch Susan on MidDay with Dan Rodricks on WYPR (88.1 FM in Baltimore) where she does her Hometown Tourist radio spot each week, and hopefully you’ll find some inspiration to go Hometown Touring yourself!
