Sharin’ the laughter and love

The Museum of Magnificent Lore–Permanent Collection Item #1
Growing Pains™ trading cards by Topps®
Featuring: 9 Picture Cards • 1 Sticker • 1 Stick Bubble Gum
c. 1988, Warner Bros. Inc., Made in USA
Gift of Tanner Almon & Vicki Yasuoka

What a splendid specimen of sitcom memorabilia to be the inaugural item in The Museum of Magnificent Lore’s Permanent Collection. A generous gift of fine art connoisseurs and moped enthusiasts, Tanner Almon and Vicki Yasuoka, this rare artifact reminds us of a much simpler time–when television wasn’t about trophy housewives, or frivolous talent contests, but about family values, laughter, love, and neighbors nick-named ‘Boner.’ This trading card set circa 1988 features 9 picture cards and 1 sticker from the hit show, along with a stick of bubble gum–which was often the custom of the day to include gum that retained little-to-no flavor with anything collectible. Gum ingredients listed on back of package as: Dextrose, Corn Syrup, Gum Base, Softeners, Natural & Artifical Flavors, Artifical Colors, and BHT (to maintain softness).

For historical purposes, a re-listing of “KIRK CAMERON’S VITAL STATISTICS !” which appears on the back of Card #35 “EITHER THIS IS THE WRONG SHOPPING BAG, OR WE’RE EATING A TV DINNER . . . I MEAN A REAL TV FOR DINNER!”:

You’ve come a long way KID A!

October marks the 10th anniversary of one of the most pivotal albums of our generation (in my humble opinion). Radiohead released KID A to the public in October of 2000 – I was a mere freshman in college, and having listened to the band throughout high school (& even seen them live at the Tibetan Freedom concert already), I really had no idea what to expect when I bought my copy and popped it in my car stereo for the first time. What followed remains indescribable. We’re hoping to capture some of that same anticipation & excitement this Thursday night, when we celebrate the impact KID A has had on not only the music of the past decade, but the fans as well. Hope you can make it to the show (details below). Thanks!

Attack of the Roller Zombie!

A couple months ago my good friend Monica (aka Roller Girl code name: Whipstick of The Junkyard Dolls) asked me to do a poster for one of the Charm City Roller Girls bouts: I have to say I was pretty nervous – their bout posters are always some of my favorite designs / illustrations that I see plastered on walls and cork-boards throughout Baltimore, and I didn’t really know what to do… so I said what the hell, yes! Whipstick was kind enough to pose for a photo holding a nice severed halloween leg (yes, with a rental skate), and then I made this illustration which Roller Girl Quickshot Kitty (also of The Junkyard Dolls clan) turned into a killer poster design. Hope you like it!

Presentar el Niño Caroperro

This past Wed. night was the 1st Loteria de Amor show at DC’s Palace of Wonders and it was loads of fun! Baltimore’s own twisted son Paco Fish juggled and then transformed himself from a hobo into a demon, along with some incredible fire-eating / dancing gals from DC… just some good ol’ fashion Burlesque! Thanks to everyone who came out for the show, the next one is going to be August 11th and even more in the fall, so keep checking the Palace of Wonders Calendar for future dates.
Here’s my entry into the Loteria show: el Niño Caroperro (or the Dog-Faced Boy), also an iPhone wallpaper size for you to download is right here.

Another great review!

I came across this great review on Accelerated Decrepitude of the BMA’s Cinematic Celebration of Poe screening (this past December ’09). For those of you lucky enough to attend (& those who couldn’t make it), writer Tom Warner gives a fantastic overview of the whole program & said some really nice things about my film too.  Its great to read about all the awesome films that played in the show, so thanks Tom & keep on blogging – the Baltimore film/art scene depends on you!!!

Rabbit Hole @ SA Film Fest!

Great news this morning: my most recent short Rabbit Hole was selected to be shown at this year’s San Antonio Film Festival! The festival runs from June 23-27 in downtown San Antonio’s Instituto Cultural de Mexico. I’d have to say this is probably the farthest south I’ve screened a film, which is just awesome. I hear that San Antonio is a really cool town and that the people are super nice, I’d love to get down to see it but I’m not sure if I’ll be able to make the trip on such short notice – who knows, keep your fingers crossed for me. As always, big huge thanks & congrats go out to my amazing cast & crew & family, who made this film possible!

Great mini-review!

I just came across this mini-review of my short film Rabbit Hole on Doreen Bolger’s blog on Charm City Current.  I shot the film last fall for the BMA’s Cinematic Celebration of Edgar Allan Poe, which was a lot of fun.  Doreen writes a really amazing & detailed recap of all the incredible films that played at the BMA, which only reminds me of how lucky I was to be a part of that amazing event, so thanks again to Doreen & the BMA, Rob Hatch of the 48 Hour Film Project, and everyone who helped me make my little movie.

Here’s a link to the article, and a blurb:

In Rabbit Hole by Nick Prevas, the male character sought his lost Lenore of The Raven fame. Here, however, the lovely but weird lady suffers from narcolepsy. Like Alice in Wonderland reborn, she appears and disappears from a closed coffin, sucked into a dark space where a huge dancing rabbit presides over mysterious events. Parts of this film were shot in a warehouse in Pigtown. Clearly, Baltimore offers no end of evocative sets!
