Elon Musk's $182-Billion Loss Breaks World Record
Elon Musk has broken the record for the largest loss of personal fortune in history, according to Guinness World Records.
It's difficult to be sure of the exact amount that Musk has lost. Forbes estimates that he has lost about $182 billion, with his net worth decreasing from $320 billion in November 2021 to $138 billion in January 2023.
Others say that the losses could be even bigger — although he's still the second-richest person in the world, according to Forbes.
It's not quite the same as losing billions of notes and coins in cash — most of this loss has come from a decrease in the value of Tesla's stock.
Musk is CEO of Tesla, one of the world's most valuable car companies.
Some people have said that after buying Twitter for about $44 billion in October 2022, he has not spent enough time on his electric car business. This is thought to be part of the reason for Tesla's stock price decreasing.
The 51-year-old's Twitter deal was big news even before the papers were signed, and Musk has since caused controversy both with his posts on the social media site and his management of the company.
In December 2022, Musk lost his position as the world's richest person to Bernard Arnault, the CEO of LVMH, which owns companies like Louis Vuitton and Christian Dior. The Frenchman has a fortune of more than $200 billion.
Before Musk's record losses, Japanese investor Masayoshi Son was the person who had experienced the biggest loss in fortune. Son, who runs SoftBank, lost $58.6 billion in 2000.
