Yoko Ono Sues Makers of 'John Lemon' Drinks
Wife of the late John Lennon, Yoko Ono, has sued a small UK-based drinks manufacturer for calling its new lemonade range ‘John Lemon.’
Ono and her lawyers say that the name infringes on the John Lennon trademark. They criticized the company for abusing the legacy of the Beatles’ legend to improve sales.
Karol Chamera, founder of Mr Lemonade Alternative Drinks Ltd, insists that the name is not linked to the singer, but will not enter into a legal battle as the company cannot afford to pay Ono’s legal costs.
Ono’s lawyers cited a post from Mr Lemonades’ Facebook page that featured an image of the brand’s logo and John Lennon holding lemons. Another advertisement shows a pair of round sunglasses famously worn by Lennon, and the words ‘Let it Be’ – the title of a popular Beatles song.
Chamera is being forced to sell his entire stock of John Lemon beverages, as he will face heavy fines for every bottle sold after the 30th of October.
The company has agreed to rebrand its John Lemon products in order to continue selling them. Chamera plans to change the name to ‘On Lemon.’
