Tokyo Tower Welcomes 190 Millionth Visitor
It isn't always easy to know what you should buy a couple for a wedding gift. In some places, couples are given "white goods" like washing machines; others get jewelry or money.
But one couple from the US got some extra special gifts as they celebrated their honeymoon in Japan.
Tobin and Lauren Tong were visiting Tokyo Tower during their post-wedding celebrations — and they got a surprise.
One of them became the 190 millionth visitor in the tower's history, and the couple were given presents!
These included a Tokyo Tower soft toy and a plaque to mark the fact that they'd helped the tower get to 190 million visitors.
It's not clear whether it was Tobin or Lauren who was the 190 millionth visitor, although in the photos it's Lauren who's wearing a special sash!
Both were visiting the tower for the first time, but Tobin had been to the Japanese capital before.
He said they were very surprised that their visit to the tower had been an extra special one.
The couple, from Seattle, posed for pictures with the president of the Tokyo Tower company, Shin Maeda.
Maeda said a lot of tourists from the US have been visiting this year, and he was glad that a US tourist had become the 190 millionth visitor.
The US and Japan have called the period from January 2024 to March 2025 "US-Japan Tourism Year." The idea is to promote travel and tourism between the two countries.
Tokyo Tower is 333 meters tall, and has been open since 1958. By 1989, 100 million people had visited.
Maeda thinks the tower will get to 200 million visitors about four years from now.
