Vienna Ranked World's Most Livable City, Again
What's important to you when choosing somewhere to live? Is it cheap rent, access to cultural activities, or great transport and education systems?
Luckily, the Economist Intelligence Unit has taken the guesswork out of finding the best places to live with The Global Livability Index 2024.
The index, which researched 173 cities around the world, lists the 10 best cities to live in based on scores out of 100 for things such as stability, health care, culture and environment, education, and infrastructure.
For the third year in a row, Austria's Vienna has taken the top spot on the list. Vienna is not only a beautiful place to live, but apparently the most livable after receiving perfect scores for stability, education, health care and infrastructure.
Denmark's Copenhagen and Zurich, Switzerland, came second and third, with both cities receiving perfect scores for education.
Australia's Melbourne fell one spot this year to fourth place, while the Canadian city of Calgary shared fifth place with the Swiss city of Geneva.
Sydney, Australia, tied with Vancouver, Canada, as the seventh most liveable cities for 2024. Housing problems pushed Australia's cities down on the list this year — and pushed Toronto, Canada, out of the top 10.
Japan's Osaka and New Zealand's Auckland finished the list sharing ninth place, holding their positions for a second year in a row.
Despite a rise in global instability with conflicts in the Middle East and Eastern Europe, average livability worldwide remained almost unchanged.
Not much has changed for the least liveable cities either, with Syria's Damascus remaining in 173rd place for another year. The conflict between Russia and Ukraine kept Kyiv in the bottom 10 most liveable cities for another year as well.
