Japanese Company Designs 'Perfect' Beer Glass
Do you have a favorite mug or glass at home — one that you think just makes your drinks taste a little better?
If the answer is "yes," then perhaps you'll understand why Japanese design company Nendo has been busy making what it calls the "perfect" beer glass.
It's a glass that almost looks like it should be an optical illusion, so you might not want to look at it for too long if you've already had a few beers!
But there's a reason for this shape.
The glass has been specially made for Sapporo's Kuro Label beer. The idea of the glass is to maximize the flavor of this Japanese drink.
Nendo says when you drink Sapporo's Kuro Label, you experience different flavors, beginning with the first sip, followed by the middle, and then the last sip.
It adds that the glass "emphasizes the changes in the flavor of beer."
So how does it do that?
It's to do with something called "mouthfeel," which is different from taste, and means the way drinks feel in your mouth.
The glass is straight at the front and back, but the left side is curved inward and the right side is curved outward.
To get the perfect experience, Nendo says drinkers should begin from the straight side so the beer "trickles down the center" of the tongue and to the back of the mouth.
Then, they'll have to remember to turn it so they're drinking from the left side. The wide rim on this side should help to fill their mouths with a "mellow, rich aroma."
Finally, the right side helps control the amount of liquid that enters the mouth and hits the middle of the tongue, allowing drinkers to enjoy the "rich flavors."
The test is, will you remember that order by the time you get to your second or third glass?
