Republicans Win US House, Trump Announces Election Plan
Republicans have won control of the US House of Representatives, which is responsible for making and passing the country's federal laws, while the Democrats won a small majority in the Senate.
More than a week after the 2022 US general elections took place, the Republican Party won the 218th seat needed to have a House majority.
However, Republicans have what may be the smallest majority seen in the US House of Representatives of the 21st century. The party had far fewer winning candidates than it had predicted going into the elections.
The 2022 elections were what are known as "midterms." These are general elections that take place around two years into a president’s four-year term and are often seen as a vote on that president and their party.
Amid the country’s economic challenges, Republicans had expected that the falling popularity of President Joe Biden, a Democrat, would help them win more seats.
Some even expected a "red wave" of support for the Republicans — red being the party’s color. However, the Democrats showed surprising resilience.
Some members of the Republican Party have blamed former President Donald Trump for its losses. Many candidates that he backed failed to win seats.
However, that hasn’t stopped Trump from announcing his plans to run for president again in 2024. He made his announcement to a room of several hundred supporters at the Mar-a-Lago club, his residence in Florida.
During his announcement speech, he described the US under Biden as having "blood-soaked streets," with an "invasion" at the border. He also said he would execute those convicted of selling drugs.
Trump refused to accept his loss to Biden in the last presidential election. And while his allegations of election fraud were found to be completely untrue, a number of his supporters took part in an attempted insurrection. They attacked the US Capitol building in Washington DC on January 6, 2021.
Trump is also currently facing possible criminal investigations after the FBI seized a number of documents marked as classified from Mar-a-Lago.
