Mark Hamill Goes Viral After Tweeting His Own Name
People can go viral on the internet for lots of different reasons. Sometimes it's because of a funny joke. Sometimes it's because of a picture of a cute pet.
But actor Mark Hamill has gone viral for a very strange reason, after getting more than 600,000 likes on Twitter just for tweeting his own name.
Twitter user Lauren McGinty tweeted at the Star Wars actor, telling him, "you could just tweet 'Mark Hamill' and you'd get thousands of likes." Hamill accepted the challenge, retweeting the tweet and adding the words, "Mark Hamill."
Lauren was right, and two hours later, Hamill's retweet already had 100,000 likes. By the next day, the tweet had gotten more than half a million likes.
Star Trek actor George Takei also joined in on the fun, retweeting Hamill's tweet and adding, "Mark Hamill. And now we wait." Takei's tweet also got tens of thousands of likes.
Hamill isn't the first person to go viral after tweeting their own name. On April 28, 2011, British politician Ed Balls accidentally tweeted "Ed Balls" to his followers while trying to search Twitter for articles with his name. The tweet was liked and shared more than 100,000 times, and some people on Twitter now unofficially celebrate April 28 as Ed Balls Day.
Some Twitter users are now asking if there might also be a Mark Hamill day.
