In June 2024, we celebrated a big moment in the history of our popular Daily News study materials: we published our 10,000th lesson!

In honor of this achievement, we worked together with the Yellow Boat of Hope Foundation to hold a special campaign; for every 10,000 lessons booked using Daily News, we donated funds to build a classroom in the Philippines.

With the enthusiasm of our students and tutors, we successfully reached and surpassed 50,000 lessons, which allowed us to donate enough money to build five classrooms. We are very grateful to everyone who helped to make this possible!

It's been several months since our campaign wrapped up, and many of you may be wondering about the progress we've made since then. So we'd like to take this time to share with you the progress of the classroom construction in the Philippines.

Progress so far

More than two years ago, a very large typhoon hit the Philippines, causing a large amount of damage to Palawan and many other islands. The disaster destroyed several schools and left many students without a place to learn.

Among those affected was New Cuyo Elementary School. However, through our donation campaign, the school has now been rebuilt from the ground up!

Here is how it looks after completing construction:

We hope it will be an inspiring place for the local children to learn!

Of course, New Cuyo is only one of the five schools we are working to improve. Although the other classrooms are still under construction, we are seeing great progress at each of the sites.

Below are images of construction taking place at Nicanor Zabala Elementary School.

An image of Nicanor Zabala Elementary School, still under construction

As of now, construction is almost complete and they will be ready to welcome students soon.

Next is Aliudin Pontongan Integrated School, where the floor is already finished and construction of the walls is happening now. These walls will allow each grade level to have its own room, allowing more students to attend at one time.

At Upper Paya Elementary School, building materials have arrived and preparation for construction is almost complete.

Finally, Isla Berde Butawanan Elementary School is currently organizing transportation and plans to purchase construction materials this week.

Stay tuned!

We are happy to see that the construction of each classroom is progressing well, and we look forward to seeing all of them complete and ready to receive excited students.

It is your help and enthusiasm for this campaign that has made this project possible, and we would like to thank you again for your passionate assistance. We will continue to provide updates on the construction status on our social media channels, so be sure to follow us to stay up to date!

]]>
Even with all of the great learning materials already available on our platform, we're always working to bring more and better tools to our community of learners.

This time, we're happy to announce an update to our popular category of Conversation materials. Starting on July 10, the intermediate Levels of 4, 5 and 6 will get a big enhancement!

Examples of new Conversation lessons on the Engoo Materials page

On the Materials page for Conversation, you'll see a section called "Now You're Talking." Here you'll find 50 new lessons available for Levels 4 and 5. In addition, we've added a new section for Level 6, which also has 50 unique lessons. That brings the total to 150 new materials for students to try!

About Conversation lessons

Examples of featured vocabulary in a Conversation lesson

In Conversation lessons, you start by learning vocabulary and phrases related to a specific topic. Next, you read an example dialogue that shows you how the words you've learned are used in a natural way by native speakers.

Once you understand these ideas, the final part of the lesson is practicing what you've learned in a conversation with your tutor.

One of the great things about Conversation lessons is that they cover a variety of useful topics. For example, you can learn to discuss things like the weather, your hometown or traveling to and from work. There are also more advanced lessons on topics such as career paths, climate change and health.

Structure and features

To help make it easier to study, each set of lessons has been separated into groups of five, with the fifth being a review. However, the lessons are designed so that you can study them in any order you like. That means you can choose the topics that are most interesting to you and move at your own pace.

In addition, through the careful use of AI technology, we've been able to group lessons and dialogue examples into consistent difficulty levels. So once you find a lesson you are comfortable with, you can confidently choose others in that range and know that they will be a good match for you.

Wrap-up

If you're used to using other types of materials, such as Daily News, why not try something new? Our Conversation materials can give you the tools to discuss many common and important topics with skill and confidence. Give them a try in your next lesson!

From the 24th to the 28th of June, we ran a campaign to celebrate the continued success of our Daily News service. Working with the Yellow Boat of Hope Foundation, our goal was to build a classroom in a rural area of the Philippines for every 10,000 lessons studied using Daily News.

Now we are excited to announce that the campaign was a smashing success!

Our goal was to reach 50,000 lessons to build five classrooms. However, we exceeded that number and reached an amazing total of 60,829 Daily News lessons! We're very grateful for what we've been able to accomplish and for the positive impact it will have on young learners in the Philippines.

Here is a list of the schools that will receive new classrooms thanks to the students and tutors who participated:

Aliudin Pontongan High School

Location: President Roxas, Cotabato

New Cuyo Elementary School

Nicanor Zabala Elementary School

Sweet success

We'd like to express our gratitude to everyone who helped make this campaign successful. It's inspiring to see that our community of learners is passionate not only about learning English, but also about making a real difference in the world.

We look forward to sharing updates on the classrooms as the construction process begins. Check out our Instagram and Facebook channels to get the latest news. You can also join the conversation using the tags #LearnTodayBuildTomorrow and #DailyNews10k!

Daily News lessons are the most popular study materials we have at Engoo. Students who use them not only learn English, they also learn about people, communities and stories from around the world.

We're thankful for the positive effect Daily News has had on learners, and this month, we're celebrating the release of our 10,000th lesson!

In honor of this milestone, we're running a campaign to donate up to five classrooms at schools in the Philippines. With your help, we want to support education not just online, but in person for a new generation of students.

About the Daily News

Daily News lessons are chosen by more students than any of our other materials. They've been used as part of university entrance exams, and we've even published them in a book for the Japanese market.

Although you can find tools similar to Daily News on other platforms, we were the first online language school to make English lessons based on news stories, and we're still the best at it!

To celebrate the release of our 10,000th article, we're continuing our company's tradition of donation campaigns to improve the lives of people in need.

About the campaign

Desks and chairs lined up in a classroom

This time, we're focusing on the Philippines, the home of many of our excellent tutors and the place where our Daily News service first started.

While many people associate the Philippines with its beautiful beaches and popular holiday destinations, life for many rural students is far from a vacation. These children often attend schools that don't have the resources and facilities found in other parts of the world. That's why the goal of this campaign is building classrooms where they're needed most.

Here's how it works:

For every 10,000 lessons booked using Daily News as the study material, we will make a donation to the Yellow Boat of Hope Foundation to build a classroom in an area that badly needs it.

And we won't stop with just one. Our goal is to go up to 50,000 lessons booked using Daily News materials within the campaign period. That means we could potentially build five classrooms!

The campaign will run from June 24 to June 28. To reach our goal, we need help from our excellent community of learners. What do you need to do? Simply book lessons with your favorite tutors and select Daily News as your study material. That's all there is to it!

Once the campaign ends, the Yellow Boat of Hope Foundation will send us regular updates about the status of the classrooms we are able to build. And of course, we will share these updates with you through our social media channels (which you can find here and here).

We can do it!

Engoo has a history of supporting communities in need, and we're excited to continue that tradition with this newest campaign.

We feel that helping children enjoy a better education experience is the perfect way to celebrate the continued success of our Daily News materials. We hope you'll join us in making these goals into real and positive change in the world.

Even though we've just announced our new tabs feature, we have even more news to share!  This time, we'd like to introduce the latest exciting use of AI on our platform.

We hope you've been taking advantage of our AI study tools. As the power of artificial intelligence continues to grow, we'll continue to use it to improve our service.

This article will introduce some new and different AI features that can help enhance your solo English study experience. Let's take a closer look.

Feature #1: Daily News Read Aloud

A screenshot of the new playback speed options in Daily News

The first feature is related to Daily News, our most popular type of learning materials. If you don't already know, Daily News articles allow you to learn vocabulary and expressions by reading interesting news stories from around the world.

Starting immediately, you can have Daily News lessons read aloud to you by an AI voice! Even better, this service provides two different voices, one in American English and one in British English. Now you can practice listening in high-quality, natural English as if a native speaker were reading the article to you.

Although you cannot select which of the voices you will hear, you can choose from five different audio speeds, so you can study at the pace that is just right for you.

Feature #2: Listen to audio from role-play sessions

A screenshot of the new speaker icon that lets users download their roleplay audio

When you use your own voice when practicing with the AI role-play tool*, you can now listen back to recordings of what you've said. To do so, just click on the speaker icon at the bottom of your word balloon.

This feature can help you practice and improve your speaking skills by learning where you are strong and the areas where you can still improve.

*This tool requires registering an account.

Feature #3: Download lesson recordings

A screenshot of the button that allows users to download the recordings of their lessons

The last feature we'd like to highlight is not directly related to AI, but it is something that has been requested by users for a long time.

Previously, lesson recordings were only available on the site, but many learners wanted the freedom to download and listen to them any time they wanted.

Now you can! Downloads will allow you to review lessons at your own pace and to study wherever and whenever you like.

Wrap-up

As technology allows us to do more tasks easily, the options you have for self-study continue to increase. We hope these new features will make your study sessions more effective and convenient.

However, remember that communicating with other people is the real goal. So we encourage you to use these features to build your skills and confidence so you're more prepared to have real conversations with our excellent tutors and with English speakers wherever you meet them.

Introducing Tabs: Our Newest Lesson Room Feature https://engoo.com/blog/engoo/introducing-tabs-our-newest-lesson-room-feature/ Tue, 16 Apr 2024 01:35:03 +0000 https://engoo.com/blog/?p=8523 We never like to stay still at Engoo, so we're constantly developing new ideas to help us remain the best...

The post Introducing Tabs: Our Newest Lesson Room Feature appeared first on Engoo Blog.

]]>
We never like to stay still at Engoo, so we're constantly developing new ideas to help us remain the best place to learn English. And today, we're happy to announce our latest feature: tabs!

This article will introduce tabs, explain how they work, and give examples of how they can improve your learning experience.

What are tabs?

You're likely already familiar with tabs — browsers use them to let users switch back and forth between websites with just one window open.  Now we're bringing this same functionality to the Engoo lesson room.

Tabs will become available on April 17, but we're sharing some information about them now so you understand how they work and can immediately get the best out of them.

What changes can you expect on the lesson page?

In the past, you were limited to only one screen for all of your lesson activities. Tabs, however, give you much more freedom in how to use materials and other lesson tools.

At the top of the lesson page you will see a tab bar that lets you quickly and easily move between different lesson materials. That means that during lessons, you'll be able to do things like:

  • Use the whiteboard without leaving a Daily News article
  • Open two images at the same time in a discussion
  • Refer to grammar material while doing a different lesson
  • See your tutor in full screen without closing the lesson material

And the addition of the tabs bar isn't the only thing that has changed on the lesson page. We've simplified the menu on the left side of the call screen to the microphone, video and general settings buttons.

Also, the whiteboard has been moved to the “+” menu next to the tabs bar, which is where you can also open Daily News articles and other lesson materials.

The simplified buttons on the left side of the lesson page

A screenshot of the "+" icon and its dropdown menu at the top of the lesson page

Find the "+" icon to the right of the newest tab

Images and PDFs uploaded to the lesson page will also appear in new tabs when they are clicked. With the previous system, images were displayed on the main screen, and when the tutor closed the image, it disappeared from the student's screen as well. But with tabs, they can remain open independently.

In addition, changes can be made directly to the image or document, and you can even save your work when you're done.

And there's more: if you click on images in Daily News articles or the dictionary, they'll also open in separate tabs! This allows you to keep your material open in one tab while you zoom in, highlight or make notes on specific parts of an image in a different tab.

If you open too many tabs to fit in the navigation bar, arrows will appear next to the "+" icon so you can scroll and find the tab you need.

A screenshot of the top of the lesson page with the tab arrows highlighted

Click the left or right arrows to see all of your tabs

Examples of ways to use tabs in lessons

Let's take a closer look at some of the ways in which tabs can be used.

First of all, you can quickly switch to the whiteboard for explanations without losing track of previously opened materials.

You and your tutor can have different tabs open too. Tutors and students being able to navigate pages independently can help make lessons much more dynamic and engaging.

For example, while you search for vocabulary explanations, your tutor can mark something on an image or highlight it in the material's text.

You can also take notes on the whiteboard while your tutor is speaking, or even play fun drawing games using two separate whiteboards.

To make the navigation of tabs easier, your tutor's current tab is marked with a blue icon in the shape of a person. This will help you avoid confusion about which material or image your tutor is referring to during a lesson. In other words, it helps make sure you and your tutor are literally on the same page!

We encourage you to take advantage of tabs to explore and find the best methods that suit your learning style.

Wrap-up

We're excited for you to try using tabs yourself. They may take a bit of time to get used to, but once you do, we know they will make your lessons much smoother and more enjoyable.

We will be adding more improvements over the coming weeks to make them even easier for you to use. So keep your eyes open for more developments in the future!

Though she comes from a small island country, Daily News Writer Chiara has a global way of thinking, which helps her at work and influences her hobbies. In this interview, we'll learn about her background, why her role on the Content Team is a great fit for her, and some of her favorite Daily News articles.

By the way, if you haven't yet, you should also check out our article on the whole Content Team as well as our interview with another writer, haiku enthusiast Michael.

Tell us about yourself!

So...I'm Chiara! I'm from Malta, a small island in the Mediterranean, but I spent seven years living in Ireland where I got my master's in literature and publishing. I taught English as a foreign language on and off for about eight years, in Malta, Ireland and Australia, and I also worked as a freelance writer and editor before I started working for Engoo. I moved back to Malta about two years ago.

Many of our readers may be unfamiliar with Malta. Can you tell us a bit about it?

It's actually one of the smallest countries in the world, so that's understandable. Malta is made up of a few small islands with an area of about 300 square kilometers — but a population of half a million people, so it's very densely populated. We have two official languages: English and Maltese, which is a bit like Arabic with a lot of European influence. It's not easy to spot on a map because it's so small, but it's about 100 km south of Sicily.

We'll be sure to look closely! So when did you join Engoo and what’s your role on the Content Team?

I joined Engoo in November 2021. I never thought I'd find a job that would comfortably combine my two main areas of work experience — teaching and writing — so I jumped at the opportunity when I saw the position advertised. I mostly work on the Daily News — as a writer, occasional editor, and more recently as a lesson developer.

What’s your process for writing a Daily News article?

To be honest, it changes depending on what the article is. I did a lot of creative writing work in the past, so sometimes my approach for Daily News is to just get everything out onto the page, even if it doesn't all make sense, and then pare it back to suit the needs of the article — like I would if I were writing a story.

Other articles require more precise planning, in terms of both structure and content, so I would usually list the most important points and write the article based on that.

Is there a particular topic you most enjoy writing about or that you find more challenging than others?

I enjoy writing about topics to do with sustainability, human rights and most things ocean-related! They tie into some of my interests outside of work, so I guess that's why I enjoy them. But I also enjoy writing about the history or origins of things, people, businesses, etc.

I do a lot of literature content too and they're probably the ones I'm most proud of because they tend to be a bit trickier than others.

Is there an article you’ve written that you’re especially happy with?

Maybe one of the literature ones, like this [article on To Kill a Mockingbird] or the profile I wrote about Zelenskyy shortly after the invasion. And this was just really cute.

Daily News Writer Chiara scuba diving in Cirkewwa, Malta

Chiara scuba diving in Cirkewwa, Malta

So you mentioned that you’ve recently started developing lessons. What’s that been like?

There's a lot to get used to, but I've been enjoying it! It's quite different to anything I've done in the past, but at the same time, it's also a bit familiar — at times, I'll be writing a discussion question and thinking of a similar discussion I might have had with a student in the past. As a former teacher, it's interesting to be working on lessons from the other side!

It’s nice to move into new areas while still being able to use past experience. So when you’re not writing articles or developing lessons, how do you like to spend your free time?

Perhaps it's not surprising since I'm from a small island, but I spend a lot of time in the water. I go to swim training before work three times a week and I'm very lucky to live less than a five-minute drive from the nearest beach. I also enjoy surfing and freediving, and I recently started scuba diving too!

When I'm not in the water, you might find me reading or cooking, and I also love traveling.

It sounds like you have a very active lifestyle. Before we finish, do you have any advice you’d like to share with our students?

First of all, well done for taking the initiative to learn English. Learning a new language can be tough, but keep at it and don't give up. It can open up a lot of doors and take you to new places — maybe even Malta!

As the year comes to a close, you can often find people discussing their favorite films, books and shows of the previous 12 months. In particular, music streaming apps have made it very popular to share and compare our favorite songs of the year.

This year, we've decided to join the festivities; we asked some of our tutors to share their top tunes of the year, and we're happy to present some of their responses below.

Remember: although we asked for favorite songs of the year, it does not mean that those songs need to have been released in 2023. So even if a song debuted 40 years ago, it doesn't matter as long as our tutors enjoyed it more than any others this year!

Why do you like it?

I love this song because I can relate to it. Losing a loved one is hard, whether that might be recently or many years ago the pain still lingers. So "I'll settle for the ghost of you" 🙂 as the song says. The song also reminds me of how short life can be and motivates me to live life to the fullest everyday and to appreciate the people in my life.

[It's a] gorgeous two-part instrumental. The first part has an overall relaxing atmosphere with some pleasant vocals whereas the second half amps up the energy significantly. Together they create a beautiful blend of moods.

Favorite song of 2023: "Wherever You Are" - ONE OK ROCK

Why do you like it?

I started listening to ONE OK ROCK music as recommended by a student. It eventually became my go to music during break time which soothes me and gives a relaxing appeal to me. It also has the combination of English and Japanese words to learn and relate to.

Whenever I listen to this song, I feel a rush of energy and happiness, and it motivates me to work out regularly. As someone who struggles to find the motivation to exercise, this song has become an essential part of my workout routine.

Wrap(ed)-up

Thank you to all of the tutors who shared their favorites. As you can see and hear, their choices covered a wide variety of eras and musical styles, from modern dance tracks to classic folk songs.

Have you discovered any new favorites from this list? Why not talk about your own favorite music of the year during your next lesson? Algorithms can be convenient, but it's also great to discover music the old-fashioned way: through recommendations and word of mouth!

Have you read our previous feature on the Content Team? Its members are responsible for all of the great materials our students use in their lessons every day.

This time, we'll continue our look behind the scenes of Engoo by focusing on an individual member of the team. Allow us to introduce you to Michael Lambe, Daily News writer and haiku enthusiast! We'll learn about his background and work process, what he misses about living in Japan, and hear about a unique love story he was able to share with our readers.

Tell us about yourself.

I am originally from the UK, and I studied literature in college where I became interested in Japanese poetry. This led me to move to Japan where I lived for over 25 years before moving to Portugal at the end of last year. While I was in Japan, I learned to read Japanese and I have done some translation work in the past. A few years ago some friends and I published a book of translated poetry called Kyoto: A Literary Guide. I also spent six months in Geneva a couple of years ago translating patent documents. But if I am honest, I prefer writing Daily News articles to translating patent documents!

Interesting! So what was it about Japanese poetry that caught your attention?

I was interested in Modernist poetry and Japanese poetry had a big influence on that. There was a group of poets called the Imagists in particular who were influenced by haiku. I became interested in these tiny poems that could capture moments and experiences so succinctly and powerfully.

When did you join Engoo, and what's your role on the Content Team?

[I joined] at the end of last September. I write original Daily News articles, edit other people’s articles and adapt AP news articles. I tend to write a lot of articles related to Japan, because I can read Japanese and am familiar with Japanese culture and society.

Was it an easy transition from patent document translator to Daily News writer?

[It was] more of a relief! I think I'm happier when I'm writing. I also like the people I work with on this team. It's a really supportive group, and I get really useful and encouraging feedback from the editors, so I think it's making me a better writer.

That's nice to hear. Tell us about your process for writing a Daily News article.

It depends on the article, but generally once I have a topic, I will do some research and see if I can find something original to say about it. By reading lots of sources you can often get an overall picture or see connections that no one else has written about. I don't do much planning; I just throw myself in the writing and let it take shape naturally.

I think that's a process that many creative workers can relate to. So what are the challenges of writing Daily News articles?

Well, the key challenge is getting the language level right for our readers while also trying to keep the writing entertaining. It can be challenging — but challenges are fun, and super-satisfying when you get it right.

Agreed. What do you do in your free time?

I like walking, eating good food, reading horror stories, watching horror movies and I have been known to write the occasional haiku. I miss Japanese onsen.

What was it about Portugal that pulled you away from Japan?

A lot of things! My wife and I came here on our honeymoon seven years ago, and then visited again a couple of years after that. Both times we were really amazed at how beautiful the cities are in this country. And we also liked the atmosphere and the lifestyle. People are friendly here — in a very relaxed way. I think we were both getting itchy feet too. We want to explore a bit more of the world, experience other cultures — and learn a new language.

Sounds great! Do you think that experience of learning a new language has affected your work as a Daily News writer?

Maybe. I have also worked as a language teacher for many years — so I suppose I have an awareness of how to communicate things simply and clearly.

Do you have an article you've worked on that you're particularly happy with, or perhaps a topic you most enjoy writing about?

Actually, I did write one article about a Japanese descendent of the Irish writer Lafcadio Hearn (who is known as Koizumi Yakumo in Japan). She moved to Ireland after meeting an Irishman who works in the Lafcadio Hearn Japanese Gardens in Waterford — so I interviewed her and her husband for the article. I was happy to tell such an unusual and romantic story.

Nice! That sounds like quite a unique story. Before we finish, do you have any advice to share with our students?

I am not the greatest language learner — it took me a long time to learn how to read Japanese. But I am very stubborn and persistent. So my advice is to keep at it, and not give up — if you do that, you will be surprised at what you can achieve!
