Avengers: Endgame Shatters Records with $1.2B Opening
Avengers: Endgame has set the record for biggest opening weekend, making an estimated $350 million in US and Canadian ticket sales and $1.2 billion around the world.
The movie had been expected to make between $260 million and $300 million in US and Canadian theaters over its opening weekend. But fans came in such numbers that Endgame far exceeded the previous record of $257.7 million, set last year by Avengers: Infinity War. Infinity War had taken the top position from Star Wars: The Force Awakens, which made $248 million in 2015.
Worldwide, Endgame shattered the previous opening weekend record of $640.5 million, also set by Infinity War. It set a new record in China, too, where it made $330.5 million.
Endgame made up 88% of all tickets sold in the US and Canada over the weekend, and was shown in more theaters in those countries than any movie before.
The film finishes the stories from the 21 previous Marvel movies, which started with Iron Man in 2008. The Marvel films have made a total of $19.9 billion in theaters.
The Walt Disney Co., which owns Marvel, now holds 11 of the top 12 movie openings of all time, except for Universal's Jurassic World. With Aladdin, Toy Story 4, The Lion King, Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, and Frozen 2 on the way, at least 40% of all movie tickets bought in the US and Canada in 2019 are expected to be for Disney films.
The only question now is how much higher Avengers: Endgame can go.
