First Video Game 'Olympics' Held in Singapore
The word "esports" was first used in 2000, but video game competitions have been around for a long time.
The earliest recorded competition was at the University of Stanford in 1972, where five students competed in a game called Spacewar!
The winner got a yearly subscription to Rolling Stone magazine.
Video game competitions have become much bigger since then — games like Fortnite or League of Legends get millions of fans watching their competitions online, and the winners can get millions of dollars in prize money.
But it wasn't until 2017 that the International Olympic Committee (IOC) recognized esports as a "sporting activity," with the possibility of it becoming an Olympic event in the future.
And the first Olympic Esports Series competition, created by the IOC, has now taken video games one step closer to being a part of the Olympics.
The finals of 10 different esports events took place in Singapore's Suntec event space over three days starting on June 23.
But unlike most normal esports competitions, the Olympic Esports Series used games based on real-world sports.
For example, the cycling event used Zwift, a virtual cycling game where players can race each other using a smart bike. And archery was played using Tic Tac Bow — a mobile game that mixes archery with tic-tac-toe.
There were also events for chess and dancing, both played using video games.
Many esports fans weren't happy that popular esports games were not included.
But a lot of popular esports games like Call of Duty or Valorant involve players fighting or shooting at other players.
And games with violence were not allowed at the event, because they go against Olympic values.
