Homesick Expats Can Buy Bottled UK Air
A company is offering people from the UK a chance to buy the smell of home in a bottle.
Delivery company My Baggage is selling 500 milliliter bottles of air from different parts of the UK for more than $30, with delivery costing almost $7.
"Our sense of smell is known to be linked to emotional memories," said the company's managing director, Paul Stewart, speaking to The Guardian. He said that since British people living abroad have been coming home less than usual this year, the company wanted to offer something that could remind them of home.
Different bottles of air are available from England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. Customers can also ask for air from specific locations in the UK. The company says that it has collected air from the mountains in the northwest of Wales, and the smell of fish and chips from Norfolk in the east of England.
Stewart said that, in a year that has been hard for everyone, a lot of orders have been from people buying the air as a fun gift for a friend. "We're really just trying to put a smile on people's faces," he said.
My Baggage isn't the only company to sell air. Aethaer sells 580 milliliter jars of air from different parts of the UK for about $125, while Vitality Air sells 8-liter cans of air from the Canadian Rocky Mountains for about $25.
