Germany Plans $13.50 Monthly Cinema Subscription
In 2024, you can watch almost anything you want without leaving your living room — or your bed. Your bank statement may include a long list of monthly subscriptions for streaming, music and gaming services.
But entertainment lovers in Germany might just be tempted by one more monthly subscription — and this one will get them out of the living room.
A company, supported by the German film board, is releasing a monthly cinema pass that will allow adults to watch as many movies as they like at the cinema for about $13.50 per month.
The subscription is called "Cinfinity," which is a combination of the words "cinema" and "infinity" — which means something has no end.
And in theory, people who buy the subscription could watch an infinite number of movies during the month!
However, people won't be able to use the subscription in every cinema in the country: cinemas must first sign up to take part.
According to Yahoo News, more than 100 cinemas have signed up so far, and others are being encouraged to join.
The German film board hopes Cinfinity will increase the numbers of people visiting cinemas by 10% to 20%.
This would be a useful boost at a time when many cinemas are finding it difficult to compete with streaming services. Other countries have already tried similar subscription plans for cinemas.
Movie fans can't buy the Cinfinity subscription just yet, but it promises to be released soon.
When it is released, people could be making big savings. According to Euronews, the average price of a single cinema ticket in Germany was about $10.50 in 2023.
