Crabs 'Choose' Winner in Funniest Crab Joke Competition
Here's a joke for you: Why did the crab cross the road?
It didn't. It used the sidewalk.
This was the winning joke in a very unusual competition held this April: the World's Funniest Crab Joke competition!
Do you get it? Crabs are known to walk sideways, so this crab wasn't crossing the road — it stayed on the sidewalk!
You won't be surprised to hear this is the first time this competition has taken place.
It was organized by "Europe's first and only" crab museum to celebrate International Crab Day on April 26.
Crab Museum, in the English town of Margate, asked people to share their best crab jokes, and the winners were chosen from a list of 700.
Crabs themselves were asked to choose which joke they thought was best!
After the judges — including some school children from the area — had chosen their favorite jokes, the top four were written on paper and placed in bags along with some canned fish.
These were then thrown into the ocean and pulled back on strings. The first one to come back with a crab that could be placed in a bucket was the winner!
No rude jokes or jokes that were scientifically inaccurate were allowed. One of the aims of the competition was to get people thinking about crabs and nature, according to the museum.
The joke in second place was a little longer.
"Man walks into a restaurant with a crab under his arm and says, 'Do you make crab cakes?’
"Manager answers, 'Yes, we do.'
"'Good,' says the man, 'because it's his birthday.'"
The joke here is that the manager thinks the man is talking about crab cakes that you would eat at a restaurant, while the man is really talking about a birthday cake for his crab!
