Where Do the Richest Americans Live?
When Forbes first published its list of the richest Americans in 1982, there were only around a dozen billionaires in the country. This year, the magazine counted 585.
Jeff Bezos, creator of Amazon, is worth $132 billion. Not only is he the richest person in Washington State, he's the richest person in the world.
The second wealthiest person in the US, Warren Buffett, is Nebraska's richest resident. The businessman and investor appeared on Forbes' first list in 1982. According to the magazine, he still lives in the home he bought for $31,500 in 1958.
The richest person in California is Mark Zuckerberg, who is also the nation's third wealthiest.
Zuckerberg dropped out of Harvard in his second year in order to work on what would become Facebook. Interestingly, he's not the only US billionaire who dropped out of college. Bill Gates and Steve Jobs, among others, also decided they didn't need a college education in order to be successful.
Forbes also gives each person on their rich list a "self-made score". A score of one means the person inherited their wealth, while a score of 10 means they made their money themselves. Mark Zuckerberg, Jeff Bezos, and Warren Buffet all have a score of eight.
Alice Walton, daughter of Walmart founder Sam Walton, on the other hand, has a self-made score of one. She is the richest person in Texas.
She is also one of the few female billionaires in the world. According to Bloomberg, 12.8 percent of the world's wealthiest people are women. And only 1.4 percent of these women are self-made.
