Tea Bag, Hot Water, Milk: How 70% of Britons Make Tea
In the UK, if people aren't talking about the weather, they're probably drinking tea — or they might be doing both.
It's a stereotype, but that doesn't mean it isn't true. For many Britons, putting the kettle on is the answer to everything.
It's believed that as many as 100 million cups of tea are drunk in the UK every day. But how do Britons make their perfect cup of tea?
According to a 2021 survey, 70% of British people agree that the tea bag should go in the cup first, followed by the boiling water and finally the milk.
The Kent and Sussex Tea and Coffee Company asked about 2,000 people about the way they drink tea, and found that other methods were much less popular.
A little over 10% of people said they pour in the water first and then put in the tea bag, while others start with the milk, before adding the tea bag and then the water.
The survey also asked about the type of milk people use in their tea, with cow's milk being the favorite — 75% said they prefer it, compared to 7.3% who use non-dairy milk and 13% who like their tea black.
About 65% of people don't sweeten their tea, while 33% choose one or two spoons of sugar and about 6% add three or more.
So how do Britons drink 100 million cups of tea daily?
Well, almost 35% of people drink one or two cups of tea each day, more than 30% have between three and five, and about 15% like five or more cups.
OK, let's put the kettle on.
