FYI: Messaging Abbreviations You Should Know
Writing messages takes time, and often requires a bit more effort than we're willing to give. That's why people use initialisms.
Initialisms are abbreviations where the first letter of each word in a phrase is said separately.
One example is "FYI" which means "for your information." This is usually used to let someone know that something may be interesting or useful to them, but that they don't have to do anything about it.
Here are some other English initialisms that have become popular in instant messages.
If you need to end a conversation suddenly, you might send the message "GTG" or "G2G" which means "got to go." This is useful if you are about to stop using the app and won't see the reply.
However, if you only need to leave for a short amount of time, you might say "BRB" for "be right back." This will let someone know you won't reply for a short time, but will return soon.
When you want to let someone know that what you're saying is not a fact, but just your opinion, you might start your sentence with "IMO" which means "in my opinion."
However, if you want to show you are being very frank in your opinion, you might instead use "TBH" which means "to be honest."
Of course, if you're just not sure what to say, you can use "IDK" instead of "I don't know."
