These Clothing Expressions Will 'Fit Like a Glove'
Finding clothes you really like can be difficult, just like finding the right words. See if these clothing expressions are a good fit for you.
If something is the right size, or very well suited to its purpose, you can say that it "fits like a glove." The expressions come from the need for a glove to fit well for it to be comfortable and useful.
So if you were well suited for your new job, your boss might say, "You're doing great, this job fits you like a glove!"
If somewhere has lots of people or things in it, you can say that it's "bursting at the seams." On clothes, the seams are where the different pieces of material have been sewn together. If someone is too large for their clothing it could burst — or break — along its seams.
So if you have too many customers at your new job, you might say to the boss, "How are we going to serve all these customers? This place is bursting at the seams!"
If you want someone to calm down, you can say, "keep your shirt on." This expression comes from the 1800s, when clothes were expensive, and most men did not own many shirts. Because of this, if they were about to fight someone, they would often take their shirt off to stop it from getting damaged.
So your boss might reply, "It's alright, keep your shirt on, let's just serve one customer at a time."
