Sony World Photography Awards Announces National Winners
The Sony World Photography Awards has announced the winners of its 2022 National Awards.
The National Awards competition was created by the World Photography Organization and Sony to celebrate the work of photographers from all around the world.
The 2022 World Photography Awards — which also includes an "open" competition, a student competition and more — had more than 340,000 entries from 61 different countries. To win the National Awards, most photographers needed to both be a citizen of a country and to live there at the time of the awards.
While most countries just had a single winner, Japan and South Korea each had second- and third-place winners, as well as their first-place winners.
All winners will be given Sony photography equipment, and will have their work included in the Sony World Photography Awards exhibition in London in April. They will also have their winning photographs included in the Sony World Photography Awards book.
Winning photographs include Slovenian photographer Matjaž Šimic's picture of wild horses running onto a beach in France. And Kuwait winner Mohammad Mirza took a photo of an elephant in front of Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania.
Japanese first-place winner Kaoru Sugiyama took a photo of people looking at the moon from the roof of a building, showing the popular Japanese activity of tsukimi, or "moon viewing."
And South Korean first-place winner Wonyoung Choi's photo shows a view of Seoul from Bukhansan Mountain, with tall buildings coming out of the clouds in the morning.
