It's actually quite difficult to choose an object, but I think I'll talk about our piano stool. I know it's a weird thing to choose, but I'll explain why. This piano stool was my grandmother's, and she said she got it from her grandmother. My grandmother was 101 when she died, so the stool must be pretty old. Its possible that it's over 150 years old! Anyway, my grandma gave it to me because she knew my children played the piano.
So, this piano stool is quite small. It's probably about as high as my knees. It could be made from oak, but I'm not sure. It's quite sturdy. I think the seat is made of silk. It's a bit tired and worn, but you can see that it once had a beautiful pattern of roses.
Hmm, what else? It feels very smooth and it smells like dust and wood polish. I do clean it, but I guess it has 150 years of dust in the fabric! We keep it at the piano, of course, and my children sit on it when they practice.
It's a special object because it reminds me of my mother, my grandmother and my great-grandmother. I often wonder how many hours of piano practice the stool has heard. When my children are a bit older, I'm going to have the fabric restored and I plan to give it to my oldest daughter. I'm hoping that she'll pass it down to her children too.
