Historical Drama Shogun Nominated for 25 Emmys
Shogun led all of television's Emmy nominees after receiving 25 nominations on July 17, while The Bear received 23 nominations — a record for a comedy series.
Nominations for The Bear, a show in which a group of sandwich makers tries to create an elite restaurant, included best comedy series and best actor in a comedy series for Jeremy Allen White.
The Bear, made by the production company FX, was also boosted by a number of guest acting nominations, including Oscar winners Jamie Lee Curtis and Olivia Colman.
Shogun dominated the nominations in drama, and has given FX, with 93 overall nominations, a very strong year.
Shogun's nominations included best drama series, best actress in a drama series for Anna Sawai and best actor for Hiroyuki Sanada.
The show's makers said in May that, despite reaching the end of the story of James Clavell's novel about political machinations in early 17th century Japan, they would explore making more than one season, moving the show from the limited series category to the more prestigious drama one.
HBO had a total of 91 nominations, including 19 for True Detective: Night Country. These included a best actress nomination for Jodie Foster for playing a police chief investigating mysterious deaths in the darkness of a north Alaskan winter.
Kali Reis, who plays Foster's investigating partner and rival on the show, was also nominated for best supporting actress in a limited series.
True Detective: Night Country will vie for the best limited series Emmy with FX's Fargo, which had 15 nominations and helps give FX a shot at wins in the drama as well as comedy categories.
Netflix has two major contenders in the Emmys.
Baby Reindeer got 11 nominations, including best actor for star and creator Richard Gadd. Ripley, a black-and-white retelling of Patricia Highsmith's novel The Talented Mr. Ripley, got 13 nominations, including acting nominations for Andrew Scott and Dakota Fanning.
These shows helped Netflix lead all outlets with 107 nominations.
The winners of the Emmy Awards will be announced on September 15.
