Professional Networking: How to Do It Online
Networking used to mean going to conferences and meeting people. Now, you can network without leaving your computer.
When we talk about networking, we're talking about making connections, building relationships and sharing information with other professionals.
So what's the secret to good online networking?
Start with LinkedIn, but do more
LinkedIn has hundreds of millions of members, so it's a good place to start, say experts. LinkedIn itself recommends commenting on other users' posts and keeping your profile active and professional.
But all social media should be your "friend," says social media expert Amanda Macchi — so don't forget apps like X and Facebook! And Rob Gillham from the Blinkist website says it can be useful to build relationships with people outside of your industry too.
It might feel like you're always competing in the world of business — but you can compete and still be nice!
Gillham says if you help someone else, perhaps by writing them a reference, they're more likely to do the same for you.
Be proactive, but patient
Marina Milosheva from Edinburgh Napier University says being proactive is the most important thing for people networking online.
Send emails and write messages to the people you want to connect with, set up short online meetings, or join online events they might be participating in.
But it's also important to remember that good networking takes time, writes Alexis Reale from FlexJobs. Be proactive, but don't move too fast.
Finally, Milosheva adds that you should make time to network online. Put it in your diary, plan how much time you need to do it well, and think about the connections you want to make.
And if you're interested in a company, speak to its employees before its CEO, says Gillham — they're more likely to talk to you, and knowing people in the company will help you in the future.
