Seoul Workers Report High Stress During Commute
Most people in South Korea use public transport to get to work. But workers in the country's capital say it's a major cause of stress.
That's according to a survey of more than 1,000 people by a company called Job Korea.
The company asked people about their commuting experiences.
Only around one in five people said they use their cars to get to work, so for many people, the issue of public transport is an important one.
People were asked to rate their levels of stress when commuting. Those in Gyeonggi province, the area around Seoul, reported the highest average levels of stress at 6.7 out of 10.
These workers also have the longest average commutes, at 58 minutes — and the time they spend traveling from home to work is the most stressful thing for them, they say.
People living in Seoul itself reported average levels of stress of 6.5 out of 10.
They spend an average of almost 47 minutes commuting, and about 56% of people said the most stressful thing is traveling in crowded buses and trains.
Outside Seoul and the area close to the capital, people spend less time commuting and feel less stressed, according to the survey.
In the rest of the country, the average time spent commuting is 35 minutes, and the average reported stress level is 5.9 out of 10.
The survey also asked people how they spend their time while commuting. About 60% said they listen to music, while 23% watch videos on YouTube or use social media.
