Internet Becomes Most Popular News Source in UK
For the first time ever, online sources have become the most popular place for people in the UK to get their news.
According to a new survey, 71% of those aged 16 and over go online to keep up to date with the news, while 70% use the TV.
Younger people are most likely to find out about the news using online sources. And among those aged between 16 and 24, 82% get their news from social media sites.
Facebook is the most popular of these social media sites for news among all adults — it's used by 30% of people.
But TikTok has become more and more popular as a news source. It was used by just 1% of people for news in 2020, but by 11% this year.
Younger people aged between 12 and 15 are most likely to get news by talking to people in their family.
Newspapers are becoming less and less popular — but newspaper websites are also being used less.
However, people tend to think newspapers and the news on TV and radio are more likely to be accurate, trustworthy and impartial than social media sites and other online sources.
However, while people know that news on social media may not be as accurate, they're still using it to find out about the world.
The big problem is that fake news is so often shared on social media, and it can be difficult to know which stories are real and which are not.
