Weak Currency Makes Norway Popular with Tourists
The Northern Lights, beautiful fjords and pleasant weather: there are already a number of good reasons to visit Norway.
But the weak Norwegian krone has encouraged more tourists to take a trip to the country, which has become a better value vacation than usual.
Norway is known to be an expensive place to visit, but this summer tourists have found their money has gone further. And according to Euronews, the country has seen more visitors from Europe, the US and Asia — especially China.
Many cruise ships stop in Norway, while other tourists choose package holidays or plan their own trips.
Tourism is good for the economy, but many Norwegian people have found that the weak krone has made it too expensive for them to travel to other countries. So instead, they're staying home and enjoying Norway along with the foreign visitors.
However, some Norwegian students in other parts of the world have found that life has gotten a little more difficult because of the situation with the krone.
There are a number of reasons why the krone is weak, and Norway's central bank has had to think about whether to increase interest rates to make the currency stronger. So far, it has not chosen to do this.
As well as being good for tourism at home, a weak krone is good for exports. But it does make importing things more expensive, which can cause prices to go up.
Norway is not the only country that has seen an increase in tourists because of a weak currency. There has been a similar situation in Japan, where many Japanese people have also been taking their holidays at home.
