Dyes with That? McDonald's Staff in Japan Can Dye Hair
Workers at McDonald's restaurants in Japan will now be able to dye their hair any color they like.
That's after the fast food company changed its policy about its workers' appearance.
Kyodo wrote that, until now, the color of employees' hair had to look "natural."
But after trying out the new policy at a McDonald's restaurant in Osaka, it will now apply in all McDonald's restaurants across the country.
Many companies in Japan are finding it difficult to get new staff. The country's population is aging, and businesses are looking for different ways to find new workers.
During the trial in Osaka, the company said it had three times as many new employees compared to the same time the previous year.
On social media, some people said it was "about time" McDonald's changed its policy, with one Reddit user saying the color of a worker's hair shouldn't matter.
In August 2021, McDonald's changed its rules to allow its workers to grow beards. One of the reasons for this was so that people from different religions would be able to work in its restaurants.
The popular sushi chain Sushiro also changed its appearance policies in 2023, allowing workers to have beards and dyed hair.
Changing hair color in Japan has often been frowned upon. It was only in 2022 that most of Tokyo's public schools changed rules that said all pupils had to have black hair.
Before this, pupils who had been born with brown hair had to dye it black.
