You'll Sound like a 'Smart Cookie' with These Expressions
The first cookies were probably made in Persia about 1,400 years ago. And if you love talking about cookies as much as you love eating them, here are some sweet expressions you can use!
If someone is physically or emotionally strong, or hard to beat or convince, you might call them a "tough cookie." And if someone is smart, you might call them a "smart cookie."
So if you were trying to sell something to someone and they kept saying no, you might say, "This customer is a tough cookie." If the customer said they knew you were asking for too much money, you could say, "You're one smart cookie!"
If something is not original — or doesn't use any new ideas — you could call it "cookie cutter." This is because cookie cutters are tools that are used to make every cookie look the same.
So your customer might say, "That's just another cookie-cutter product that costs too much. I could get the same thing for cheaper."
If someone is complaining about something bad that has happened, you could say, "That's the way the cookie crumbles." This means that nothing can be changed, and that we sometimes just have to accept it when bad things happen.
So if your boss was unhappy that you didn't sell anything to the customer, you could say, "Well, sometimes that's the way the cookie crumbles."
